And trash your apartment if you aren't careful.
Don't go yet!!! Hear me out!
This has the potential to occupy your older kids indefinitely, and with some rules and guidelines, it can be done with minimal to no damage to your home/environment.
Have them put together a Rube Goldberg machine.
For those who are unfamiliar, a Rube Goldberg machine is an overly-complicated machine that's been created to accomplish a very simple task, generally based on a fancy sort of domino effect.
Rube Goldberg machines take a ton of planning, experimentation and adjustment, and can be made with items you'd usually find lying around your home, so they're perfect for bored minds stuck at home. A designated notebook may help. And your kids will be proud to show off their creations!
Here are some fabulous examples for inspiration:This guy makes great machines, but they sometimes use fire or other materials not safe for kids. Still, an excellent example. (If you're sensitive to kol Isha, mute the video before the end.)
A simple machine without much point that includes a planning diagram.for the machine.
A basic example.that even younger kids can understand and set up (sorry the volume isn't great, and there's a dog in it.)
A fascinating and complex machine that unfortunately produces a lot of waste, destruction, and mess. Still, it's great for ideas about how far one could take this.
With some.basic ground-rules about materials, space, safety etc. This could be a great way to occupy your kids for ages!
